Ok Ok .. I'll do the darn Twitter thing.

Mar 20

The big buzzword on the net these days must be " TWITTER " a sort of "microblogging service" that allows you to quickly enter what you are doing at the moment , and posts that on a website (or integrates it into an RSS feed ) Somehow people think this is the most exiting thing since apple pie, but don't ask me why. With Twitter you can add friends to your little Twitterworld so you can see what they are doing and they can see what you are up to. Now I must say : I dont particularly lie awake at night because I'm not telling people on Twitter that I can't sleep. Nor do I toss and turn in my bed not knowing what others are doing at this very moment. Yet the buzz about this service is all over the place.

After spouting my opinions on the GGP about the whole Twitterthing I was challenged by a listener to at least give it a try. So for arguments sake (and arguments sake alone!) i shall dabble into the Twitter world , if only to prove you that services like this show you how boring people's life is or .. how people can be compulsive liars in making crap up just to beef up their Twit's.  Hence the "twitterbar" if you look to your right where you can see an rss feed of my own " twits" or "tweets" (whatever they call this entries).  I will give it a buzz for a week and see how it goes. But for now i'm already irritated that I have to be on a PC to use Twitter. If there was a client for my TREO that I could use .. Then i would be more exited about the service.

But speaking about RSS : The BLUEDOT feed that you can also find on your right sports an RSS feed of the latest BOOKMARKS I made online, and THAT is more interesting then whether  or not i'm changing my socks for the first time in two weeks. Keep your eye on that little list or go over to my Blue dot profile to check out what i've bookmarked. The cool thing about THIS service is that I can bookmark from anywhere and have all my "findings" in a nice little tagged list that YOU can take a peak at as well.  Far more interesting then Twitter I think !

Nathalie does Vermeer 2.0

Mar 16

A bit of a special post today, just to let you see that there might still be hope for the future. If we think that kids these days only spend their time on myspace, text their thumbnails away or hang out in msn until the keyboard breaks. As the digital age speeds up more and more the next generation diverts even further into the digital realm and it look like some "classic skills" might become obsolete.

Take painting for one. Most kids these days whack around their content in Photoshop, combine the most hideous colors on their myspace account and would think a classical crayon to be something to go with their Palm Treo. But luckily , their are exceptions to the rule.  For example , take Nathalie. A member of the young cyber-generation that cast away her mouse and keyboard for a short while and ( behold ) took it upon here to PAINT with actual PAINT (not ms-Paint) and an actual BRUSH (not a Photoshop brush). Now little Nathalie does not dabble with potato figurines or Barba-Pappa’s. She grabs hold of the lace collar of none other then Vermeers ( one of the great Dutch masters) and his most famous painting  : The girl with the pearl earring. A very famous peace !

What blew me away is not only the initiative of doing something like this (bless the teacher) but the quality of her reproduction. Perhaps it’s a copy of a masterpiece, but its more then a copy, its like Vermeer stuck it in a Timemachine, warped it into the mind of little Nathalie and inspired her to give it a .. contemporary twist. Kind of a  Vermeers 2.0 version of the same work, but this time by a TWELVE year old kid !  Wicked work Nathalie ! Awesome !

Best deal on Ebay (so far)

Mar 16

So bite me for being a big bad geek, I don't really care cau se this week I might have done my best buy yet on the wonderful world of Ebay. As you all know i'm an avid Star Trek fan (no costumes, no ears , I just like the show and love to read the novels). Reading Star Trek Novels is something i've been enjoying for years now and it had significantly improved my English vocabulary up to the point that I cant stand to read a Dutch sci-fi book of the genre at all. Now getting your hands on one of these baby's is far from easy. Since its a little bit of a niche market (and its in another language) there are almost no bookstores around here that carry them. Until a few years ago I had to go to the MEKANIK comic book shop in Antwerp where I would " Find many, Pay more " for those little paperbacks (and hardcovers) Recently I have found a line of second hand stores called " De Sleghte "  in Maastricht and Leuven that occasionally have some. Prices are cheaper but the books are second hand too. (no matter though) The bitch is : When you want to buy a series of books (for example book one ,book two ..) of a particular story, your often screwed cause most of the times on of the books in the sequence is gone. So the intriguing "S.C.E." series recently published had not been mine to own.

Imagine my surprise while wasting some time on Ebay, when I  was squandering some time in the searchbox looking for "Star Trek". Suddenly I found four books of the SCE series in mint condition for .. 1.9 euro's ! ( 2.5 $ us). I placed a bid expecting the price to soar upwards at the end of the sale. BUT ! I won !  ! ! ! For 5 euro's I had the four books shipped to my very home. When I look at the price of these baby's in the Mekanik Store ( 15 euro's a POP) I can only say : I did my best deal on Ebay so far !.

And just for that we now sing a little song together ! 🙂

Next time you are in a meeting. Don't think about this !

Mar 15

Meetings, Incredible collections of people who sit around the table and just love to waste each others time. Competitions of drawing the nicest powerpoint presentation or just marathons of boring one another to death. My old boss used to say : If you are bored, lonely or don't know WHAT to do with your day : Hold a meeting. You can meet people, feel important, make Presentations and get to draw on the big whiteboard ! So next time you are IN a meeting and your boss picks up the black marker to draw something on the screen … For heavens sake : DON"T THINK ABOUT THIS VIDEO.
