Sticky Mouse Syndrome.

Sticky Mouse Syndrome.

When I look deeper and deeper into the soiled heart of the machine I am pretty much on the level with what has been the source of this mayhem. PORN ! As I absently wrap my fingers along the surface of the optical  mouse lying around .. I feel it. Somehow there is some resistance when i want to pull back my fingertips. The palm of my hand is feeling a little damp .. the mouse is somehow a little … Sticky !!!!!

Taboo.

Every culture has its taboo's. Every community has its unsaid secrets. Things you don't talk about. Things you don't say. Hushed words in dark hallways. And not even the edge of real and cyberspace is free from them.

In all the years that I have been working in the IT support sector I have occasionally come across these "symptoms" when visiting clients or dealing with computers that people brought in. And in all my experience I can only say : When ever encountering this aquard phenomenon its best NOT to mention it .. to wash ones hands when done and never .. ever .. during even the slightest laps of your attention put your fingers near your mouth.

sticky mouseIn the best Houses.

And it happens in the best houses. Rich or poor , your or old .. and just as disturbing with the male and female sex.  You must understand. The results of these symptoms usually spread to the inside of the system as well. Corrupting the registry .. Dragging unwanted  Trojans pop ups and what have into the immaculate registry. And soon after that the machine starts to show the strain as well.  Time to call in the local IT consultant (that would be me ) to come down and fix the machine

So I get the call to come down to the clients house and take a look at this 'blasted computer' that has suddenly sprouted the urge to start surfing the Internet by its self and is refusing to run on an approximation of 'normal speed'. When I happily pull over on the driveway of client X I have my gear with me (just like a regular doctor) , pop in, accept the generously offered cup of coffee and listen to the problem , only afterwards to  proceed to the 'study area' of mr or mrs X where the computer resides.

"It does it all by its self !"

Without thought I sit down at the machine and start clicking and clacking away into the computers malfunctioning operating system. And pretty soon the first naked lady pops up (on the screen) by herself. ' You see ! ' , the client shouts ecstatically ' It does it ALL by its self. This more then eager chance at getting an alibi for porn-on-the-screen usually sets of my first alarm bell. The harder people shout they DID NOT do anything .. the more likely it is .. that they did !

Pretty soon my spidy sense is confirmed as the registry is filled with Trojans and malware. Usually picked up at porn sites all over the globe where naked ladies, gentlemen or farm animals in various states of sexual arousal ask you to gingerly 'click here for free stuff'.  What amazes me is that users DO this !  Imagine taping a peace of candy to an angry rotweilers collar and attaching a note  " Free Candy" No one in their right minds would do so .. yet on these sites .. they do !  So the users computer is tended to feel the burn .

Sticky mouse alert !

My tummy gently banks to its side as I can suddenly feel the world shrink around me. With the  dumbstruck innocent mr X sitting inches away from me  I cannot squeal a profound IEUWWWWW when I discover : STICKY MOUSE SYNDROME ! or SMS. !

The nature of sticky mouse syndrome is combination of porn on the computer and the fact people are either right OR left handed in both using a mouse and spanking the proverbial primate. In extreme cases of … lets just call it 'on line infatuation' with not-so-highly-clad ladies on the Internet this results in bodily fluids ending up in places where they do not belong. This mostly due to the fact that the user right clicks with the very same hand and does not have a Kleenex in reach.

As I try to keep my composure, user X looks at me sheepishly and chooses that very moment to proclaim he has absolutely NO idea how that ' dirty picture' ended up on his hard drive. As I fight to keep my poker face, i cannot help but feel my skin gently sticking to god knows what on the mouse's surface. I gently spread my knees and look down to the very end of the comfortable office chair I am sitting on and that is probably used by user X on a daily bases. Very small strange stains seem to perch on the side ..  I shudder once again.. and as I race through the job longing for a big peace of soap to wash my hands with … I keep on cursing to myself  .. how I hate .. Sticky mouse syndrome.

Loosing cultural ground… and gaining some.

May 08

If there is to be a point where I have to officially admit it .. i guess its here and now.  Besides from losing my mind ( which happened a long time ago), my ties with something that would have to represent reality ( out the window ) I have now also lost all cultural ties with my own nationality / hometown etc.

The reason you ask ? Well besides from the first two , who where only a matter of time , the loss of cultural integrity is entirely to blame on the internet. And in this case : Skype to be precise.   Over the last week while working hard on the new website design and being in the works of providing the whole Knightwise.com idea with some more traction, I have stumbled across two gentlemen who happen to live on other sides of the planet.  Dave ( from Roostersrail ) and Sebastian ( From Sebs Random thoughts ) are two very talented writers / podcasters who happen to hang out in cyberspace together a lot. So as little old me stumbled across their mutual Skype conversation .. The hook – line and sinker scenario unfolded .. And farewell Flemish roots.

But i'm getting ahead of myself. The reason for this loss of cultural integrity is not only the fact that I am spending more and more of my time (online) with people from all over the world (Saturday morning was happily squandered away in a conference call between a Sacramento professional body-painter and his wife, an american college student living in Britain and little old me) I also caught myself talking global events with Wallaby-land Australia while doing the dishes.  And at that point I'm not even mentioning emailing people around the globe and now having to refer to persons with their nationality or personal website attached to their name , in order to keep them apart.

And its butchering my English accent (which is getting seasick from swinging between American-southern-states-style and British-nine-o'clock-news-style) It now has tendencies  to lunge for an Australian-I-just-shot-mysellf-a-crock accent (Thank you Sidney !) But far more worse .. It is absolutely killing my cultural identity. So close to the Eurovision song contest where us Europeans do want to patt ourselves on the chest and shout .. I'm a proud 'Insert-country-here' , I on the other hand feel like a citizen of the world. Knowing somebody personally on every continent and having these people interact with you on a daily bases has done nothing good for the xenophobic backwater-smalltown-mindset that I sprang from.

So there is a wonderful danger on the edge of real and cyberspace. It lurks in every corner and the more people you meet the more dangerous it gets. It takes away these preciously built misconceptions we have. Stereotypes of all kind that help us make sense of the world as we jam everybody we don't even know into preselected cubicles in order to make sense of it all.  This danger is called : REALITY .. The reality that dawns upon you when you start realizing that we are ALL just people and that fearing what you don't know is the dumbest thing you can do.  And more importantly ..After seeing that people are just people , you have to realize, YOU are just people to .. and the cubical of your own nationality / ethnic group has just faded away around you.

People are just people and its great to get to know them one by one.. I'm not a Belgian, You're not 'black' .. He's not a Muslim .. She's not a Republican ..

WE are all just people.

New Knightwise.com website Done !

May 05

 New website in full swing.

Codemonkey It has been a roller coaster ride, but i'm very happy to say : The new website is UP ! It took me quite some time to figure everything out but as I am in the stages of ironing out all the final errors .. I'm very very pleased. Why the new site ? Well , for one because its much more interactive. The old site ( whose design inspired THIS site of course ) was very nice but did not offer enough in terms of interactivity, archiving options, searching options and so forth PLUS the fact it was very hard to manage. I needed a website I could manage from just about any operating system, and from just about any computer for that. Law and behold : On came JOOMLA. Joomla is a content management system , which , as i said in the podcast a few weeks ago, is a nice word for an unga-munga super-website-diesel-engine. It lets me do the design of the site, the managing of the content and basicaly everything else … on the web. No more uploads and downloads with ftp. Just a big administration console on the web and hopla !  But great thanx goes to Codemonkey Rob who pointed me towards this system and helped valiantly in setting it up. As I swung between victory and despair trying to figure out the basics of the system WITHOUT a manual (just pure deductive thinking dear Watson) He helped behind the 'screens' and did all the extra codework. So thank you codemonkey Rob !

Timewarp.

Not only did the new Dr Who series start on BBC , I mysellf have become some sort of timelord. Going back and copy-pasting old posts from 2004 and 2005 to the new blog have sent me spiraling through time and space mysellf. Its wierd to read through ones own memories.. But fun nonetheless. Speaking of our favorite timelord : Here is the site

But : Knightwise gets around.

Thepaintedbody Along with the whole overhaul (that will hopefully be finished by next monday , I mysellf am on an international promo tour around the web. Several sites have linked us up after the EMJ festival ( see podcast number 28 , life as a podcaster) I've been appearing on Kevin Mason's

Coloring outsite the lines. in an interview about my good old days as a Dj. Be sure to check out Kevins work , as th is guy is a proffesional body painter. Okay you pervs, whipe dry those drooling chins, this guy is an artist ! (and a podcasting artist for that , so go have a looksee.  Next up I had the pleasure of appearing on Jawbone Radio , one of my favorite non technology related podcasts. A fantastic hour of hilarious banter between Nora and Len who for some reason resemble Me and Nyana ( The Fantastic Wife living with the Uber-Geek) They did a live show  this week, But due to the difference in timezones it was impossible for me to make it and call in . But we thought of a little solution, tune in and listen how hilarity ensued.

And to top it all of we got a fantastic review on Roosters Rail and we let the quote speak for itself :    " …. and he has a podcast called the Knightcast. It is a great quality podcast; hell he uses VBR encoding at high bit rates – bandwidth must be cheap in Bulgaria! Plus I think his accent is cool. "  Besides the fact that good old Dave thought I was Bulgarian , in my humble opinion I think he's right on the money.
