App Week : Redditing brings Reddit to Windows (Windows)

Oct 23

We don’t have a lot of love to spare for “Metro apps”. (We  decline to grace them with the “new-ui” title they prefer to be addressed with) When you browse through the Windows Phone store, most applications you find are disappointing to say the least. The selection is sparse and there is a lot of 3rd party crap out there. When we went in search of a good “Reddit” app our expectations were quite low. So imagine our surprise when “Redditing” proved to be a well written and zippy application that lets you wade through the soggy marches of the internet known as “Reddit”.

Redditting

Find browse and bookmark you favorite sub-reddits, Read through articles, post comments and of course .. look at the shiny pictures. No matter if you waste hours of your life, you will finally find good use for your Windows Phone, or that Windows RT Surface tablet that you have been using as a doorstop right until now. Reddit/r/thefappening might not be online anymore but “Redditing” will help you find new stuff on Reddit to watch.

Myo : Bring on the smart bracelet and control your digital world.

Feb 28

In the category “Shut up and take my money” friend of the show Konrad sent us a great new product that we can pre-order if we have some cash to spare. The MYO can be considered the lovechild between the Microsoft Kinect (but without any optics) and a Nintento Wiimote. This “Smart Bracelet” uses the power of gyroscopic sensors with muscle movements to ” See what you mean”.  Just like the “Leap” we talked about on a previous post, the Myo offers another deadly nail to the coffin of mice and touchpads all over the world and is heralding the coming of a new age where a we will interface with technology in a way that is dramatically different from today.

Whether or not this is vapor-ware still needs to be proven. The site is taking pre-orders and at 149 dollars its a risk some of you might be willing to take. If the Mo ever gets massed produced depends on the way developers will react to this. Unlike Google with Google Glass , this company does not have a multi million dollar budget or hords of drooling staggering developer-zombies on its payroll. But it all .. it looks amazing.

Aside from the fact that you will look a little awkward waving your hands and arms around to make a point. Some people might mistake you for a Sith lord and await lightning bolts to fire from the fingertips of your outstretched hands, Others might see you as the next leader of the “third reich” as you swing your rightarm upward to control that military jeep. Although I can see the possibilities here, I’m also very worried that you might delete the textfile you have been working on for hours because you scratched your head with the wrong hand.

But no matter if it makes you look as a megalomaniac super villain who is suffering from an epilepsy attack in the middle of the street .. I want this !

Bohdi, ONE linux distro for your Netbook, Nexus, Mk802, Chromebook and Raspberry PI.

Feb 02

With all the great feedback we have been getting on the last podcast episode ” Return of the Netbook” we have gotten quite a few Knightwise.com fans asking “What would be a good distro to pick”. Yeah sure there are plenty of *buntu or Debian based versions of Linux out there with a very light desktop interface. But most of them are based on Lxde or Xfce. The downside with these graphical skins is that … everybody else has them too. And you want to stand out .. right ? So not only do you want to score hordes of fans in the geek world (and the oposite or same sex) with your flaunting walk as you ‘stride’ through the shopping mall holding your Netbook .. You also want something that no-one else has… Yet.

If in need of an original spin on the “light linux desktop” you might want to go for Bodhi Linux.  It features an “Ubuntu 12.04 LTS” underground topped off with an Enlightenment (or E17) desktop and a pretty look and feel. I would describe the extra features of Bodhi as ‘added icing’ , but that would make this article resemble a Culinary cupcake review.

Not very impressive I hear you say : But wait ! Bodhi is also available for your MK802 AND your Chromebook  your Google Nexus AND your Raspberry Pi !  Talk about one OS to rule them all !

Download the 32 of 64 bit versions of Bodhi here. If not satisfied with the results, pimp it just the way you want it and make it into their “Desktop hall of fame”.
