Game week : Closing up with suggestions from the Wiseguys.

Feb 01

Well, we hope you enjoyed “game week” on the Knightwise.com blog. We had a great time in the comments section and on the different Social Streams ( Like our Facebook group , our Twitter channel and our Google+ community)  We didn’t want to keep THEIR submissions from you trusty blogreaders .. So here come the suggestions … from the Wiseguys.

So to close it all off I want to share with you, 8 minutes of standup comedy that has inspired me to do this series of posts. Askit that had me in tears with laughter and , at a certain point, nearly cost me my spotless non-incontence score. Enjoy Dara O Briain at the “Night at the Apollo”, taking about gaming. Forgive me if I stole ONE of his jokes .. When you hear the rest , you will thank me for it.

Time to raise the hairs on the neck of all Wifi-enabled laptop and mobile phone users in this interesting interview with Gerjon McVries ( @mcvries on Twitter) about “The pineapple” and its awesome (and malevolent) potential when it comes to exploiting basic flaws in Wifi enabled devices. If you were worried about the NSA sniffing your traffic in the Prism debacle, then try not to realise that a 14 year old scriptkiddie with a paypall account could buy this awesome toy and sniff every bit you transmit.

Before we close off 2012 .. a word of thanks !

Dec 31

With only hours to go before we close down 2012, my last post of the year will be one where I get to look back and take the time to say thanks. Thanks to all of the people who helped Knightwise.com get through this last year, to those who contributed, those who consumed, those who supported and those who criticised. All of you have had a crucial roll in the process that makes Knightwise.com possible.

To my wife.
Without @niejana, none of this would be possible. Not only is she an understanding and loving wife, she is also a big geek who understands what this whole ‘technology thing’ is about. Without her support, her patience, her enthusiasm and her constructive criticism, Knightwise.com would be shit-on-a-stick. Not only was she a camerawoman, producer, photographer, researcher .. she also was the driving force that inspired a lot of what I do. I thank her for her patience and her love. For being there through the good and the bad times. She is the glue that holds my universe together.

To the crew.
Knightwise.com used to be a one-man-thing. But luckily that is a thing of the past. From the ranks of the community have risen a band of extraordinary people who devoted their time, creativity and talent in making Knightwise.com even better.

The guru’s : Behind the scenes sit a couple of exemplary code monkeys. I’m talking about @kdmurray for his WordPress skills and the all nighters he pulled to keep Knightwise.com up and running. Next to him (but on the other side of the planet) sits @moonenmoonen who is not only our ‘graphical wunderkid’ responsible for ‘new look and feel’ but who also helped SHAPE the “Hacks tips and tweaks” identity we have today. These guys made the magic .. i’m just the pretty face.

The ninja’s : Whenever Knightwise.com went “out and about” we had the chance to work with some very talented people. House photographer Konrad Dwojak, Cameraman Stefaan Lesage, producer @niejana and of course our newest member @beebiegie. They have the patience to put up with me and the stamina to keep up when I go into ‘creative geek’ mode.

To the guests.
Knightwise.com would be a dull site without our guests. The many guests we had on the podcast (and the guestbloggers like Stefaan Lesage and @mcvries) brought their knowledge and enthusiasm to the table. Their content and contributions where awesome.

To the community.
And last, but not least .. to the community. To the people who listen to the podcast, who read the articles, who shoot us tweets and emails. Who hang out with us on Google+, who comment on our Facebook posts .. the people who consume Knightwise.com. Without your appreciation and feedback this would a pointless exercise. But WITH it, doing Knightwise.com becomes the greatest and most grateful hobby in the world. We take the stage and gladly take a bow for every single one of you.

So in 2013 we will continue … Tuning technology into your way of life …

Ubuntu 12.04 : Mount that iPad : Play .Avi : No iTunes :-)

Sep 21

We are very happy to line up one of our new guestbloggers on Knightwise.com. Its @McVries_ who kicks of the series with a great article on “sliding” from Ubuntu to IOS and hooking up your iPad .. without iTunes .. on a Linux machine.

Ubuntu 12.04 : Mount that iPad : Play .Avi : No iTunes 🙂

iTunes has some disadvantages, and one of them is a rather serious one for any linux user. It just isn’t available. Although some older versions are said to be Wine compatible I have a Windows virtual machine setup to be able to use iTunes (amongst other tasks). But since spotify I don’t sync that much music anymore and for my daily dose of podcasts I’ve dumped iTunes a long time ago. But what about movies? Well, i recently figured out that it’s a lot easier for an Ubuntu user to transfer them to an iPad then for, let’s say, a Mac or Windows user. How? Directly from the Desktop! And in a lot of cases you don’t even need to bother to convert it to a native iOs format. Een .avi or a .mkv plays very well.

The Recipe: An iOs device, in my case an iPad, one USB cable, your computer running Ubuntu and (for example) OPlayerHD Lite (Free as in beer in the appstore).

After connecting your iOs device you will see two mountpoints pop up in your filebrowser. One of them facilitates your photo import and the other one with a name like “Documents from {Username}” is the one we want now. This is the one that will help you ‘inject’ a file in almost any off the applications you have installed on your device. If you open it you’ll see something like this:

Documents

And OPlayer is in there as well. (Why do i use OPlayer? It supports .avi, mkv, and dvd-folders, locally and over the network). Double click it’s icon and finally you’ll find a folder called Documents and a folder “Inbox” within. Now just paste the movie you want to watch and watch it dive into your iPad at an enjoyable speed. Start the applicationon on the iPad, browse to the My Documents folder and Enjoy. Offline!

Some caveats: Copying a 8 GB Matroska (.mkv) would prove to be rather pointless, the iPad isn’t hefty enough i found. Take a more modest one, around 2 GB for 90 minutes and it seems to work well. Avi is no problem at all.
